Alberta

If you’ve ever seen photos of Canada before, chances are those photos were from Alberta – more specifically Banff or Jasper, two of the most scenic (and popular) national parks in the country. It took me 27 years to make it across Canada and finally visit the west coast – and I gotta say, I’m ashamed I didn’t do it before.

It doesn’t really matter what you’re into when visiting the Rockies – there’s definitely something for everyone up there. If you happen to be into photography and hiking like I am, there is no limit to what you can do there. I visited the area in the Summer of 2020 during the COVID pandemic which resulted in smaller crowds than usual and some facilities being closed for the season. Note that the Rockies border British Columbia and that I did a 5 day hike in Assiniboine Provincial Park during my stay in the area – you will find the photos from that hike on the BC page of my website

Banff

Have you ever been somewhere that you had been told about a million times and when you finally made it there it just didn’t live up to all the expectations you had? Well, just like you I’m sure, I had heard of Banff a lot before – and had seen thousands of pictures of the National Park online too – but it still swept me off my feet. No amount of pictures can prepare you for a drive down the Icefield Parkway, a hike atop one of Banff’s many iconic peaks, or a dip in one of the park’s turquoise-water lake. I’m sure you’ll find plenty of information online on what to do and see in Banff, and hopefully you’ll find some inspiration in my pictures. All I can recommend is that you take the time to drive around and check out as much as you can between the towns of Canmore and Field.

Jasper

Similarly to Banff, Jasper is very touristy and therefore convenient to visit. I headed there without a clue of what I was going to do and ended up camping at the overflow campground (which was great for an auxiliary campground) and driving around all day to find the best spots to explore on foot. After reading about it online I headed to the Opal Hills hike located near Maligne Lake – I highly recommend it for a somewhat easy day hike that offers stunning views of the lake and valley. I only had two days in the area and wished I had more – especially since it took me a full day to drive the Icefield Parkway because it was so beautiful I had to stop my car every five minutes to take pictures!
